Piles, medically known as hemorrhoids, occur when the veins in the lower rectum or around the anus become swollen and inflamed due to increased pressure. This pressure affects blood flow in the anal veins, causing them to enlarge and sometimes bleed or become painful.

Common Causes of Piles:

  1. Chronic Constipation
Straining during bowel movements puts excessive pressure on anal veins, which is one of the most common causes.

  2. Prolonged Sitting
Sitting for long hours, especially on the toilet, increases pressure in the rectal area.

  3. Low-Fiber Diet
Lack of dietary fiber leads to hard stools and difficulty passing stools, increasing strain.

  4. Pregnancy
Increased pressure from the growing uterus and hormonal changes can lead to hemorrhoids.

  5. Obesity
Excess body weight increases pressure on pelvic and rectal veins.

  6. Chronic Diarrhea
Frequent bowel movements and irritation can also cause vein swelling.

  7. Heavy Lifting
Repeatedly lifting heavy objects improperly can increase abdominal pressure.

  8. Ageing
With age, the supporting tissues of the rectum weaken, making piles more common.

When to See a Doctor:

If you experience persistent bleeding, severe pain, or prolapse (piles coming out), medical evaluation is important. Early treatment can prevent complications and avoid the need for surgery.

Simple lifestyle changes, dietary improvements, and timely medical care can effectively manage and prevent piles.
